Professor Dr Wolfgang Brück Chairman of the Executive Board of the University Medical Center and Dean of the Medical Faculty

Professor Dr Wolfgang Brück was a Neuro-Compass Steering Group member until August 2019. From 1 August 2019, Professor Bruck changed position from Head of the Institute of Neuropathology to Chairman of the Executive Board of the University Medical Center and Dean of the Medical Faculty at the University of Göttingen, Germany. He remains a valued contributor to the Neuro-Compass platform.

In 1986, Professor Brück obtained his MD from the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, Germany, before going on to specialise in neuropathology at the University of Göttingen. Prior to returning to the University of Göttingen in 2002 he held academic positions at the Insitute of Neurology, University of Vienna, Austria (1997) and at the Deparment of Neuropathology, Charité University Medicine Berlin, Germany (1998–2002).

Professor Brück’s primary research interests are the structural features and immunopathology of multiple sclerosis (MS), both in human tissue and experimental animal models. In particular, his work has focused on the mechanisms of degeneration that affect myelin, oligodendrocytes and axons, as well as on mechanisms of regeneration, particularly remyelination in MS lesions. In recent years, Professor Brück’s research has also covered the definition of different immunopathological subtypes of MS and the correlation between MS lesion pathology and brain atrophy/disability.

Professor Brück serves on the editorial boards of Neuropathology and Applied Neurobiology, Multiple Sclerosis International and Therapeutic Advances in Neurological Disorders.
